Student School Board Representatives are the voice of Hopkins High School and are responsible for sharing that perspective with the Board. Although not allowed to vote as members of the Hopkins School Board, Student School Board Representatives are encouraged to be engaged at the Board table.
The main responsibilities of Student School Board Representatives include:
Student Board Representatives have the opportunity to work closely with the Hopkins School Board, provide input, and share their student perspectives. It is a clear leadership position that will enhance future college applications. Students also have the ability to build important relationships with leaders of the Hopkins Public Schools District.
The Hopkins School Board began its Student School Board Representatives program in 1991. At that time, two students were appointed to serve as advisory members to the School Board. In 2000, the Board asked to increase the number to three students — one to represent each grade level — and asked each student to serve for three years. That format remains in place today.
A staff facilitator at Hopkins High School is responsible for managing the Student Board Representatives. The role of the facilitator is to guide the students and help them navigate roles and expectations. The facilitator works with students to grow their organization, leadership, and public speaking skills.
Students who would like to be considered for the Student School Board Representative program must be involved in Student Government. They need to be mature and responsible enough to handle the public speaking elements of the job. Ideally, students will begin their terms as sophomores and continue on, representing their respective grade levels, for three years.
If you are interested in learning more about our Student Board Representatives program, please contact Hopkins High School at 952-988-4500 or email the Hopkins School Board at School-Board@HopkinsSchools.org.
The Hopkins School Board set goals for the 23-24 school year that reflect the priorities of our Hopkins Schools community. These goals align with the leadership framework categories that all Hopkins School District leaders use to advance Vision 2031: teaching and learning, school district and culture, and operations.
In order to lead a district dedicated to equity and innovation, school board members must constantly evolve in their understanding of educational issues impacting our scholars. School board members will engage in individual and collective professional development throughout the school year.
Key Actions
As representatives of the community, it is important that school board members engage with scholars, staff, parents/caregivers, and community members to understand their priorities and how the School Board’s decisions impact them.
Key Actions
Board Culture
Four Hopkins School Board seats are up for election in November 2023. There are four candidates running. The Board will welcome one returning board member and three new Board members in January 2024. We will intentionally onboard and fully support new members while co-creating an inclusive and effective board culture.
Key Actions
The Hopkins School Board is responsible for using tax-payer dollars responsibly by adopting a balanced budget that supports the operationalization of Vision 2031. Public school finance and budgeting are complex processes that can lead to confusion. It is essential that these processes be transparent and understandable to our community.
Key Actions
The Hopkins School Board is responsible for creating district-level policies that support the operationalization of Vision 2031.
